Yeasayer – Odd Blood

Posted March 9th, 2010 by BVaz · 1 Comment

Yeasayer has returned with their follow up to the stellar All Hour Cymbals ealier this year with their release of Odd Blood. It seems that this release has stirred some love/hate reactions around the web, but for myself I very strongly and clearly am coming down in the love camp on this one. This album is incredible, and certainly sits as the leader in the clubhouse on album of the year so far ...

Los Campesinos! – Romance Is Boring

Posted March 5th, 2010 by BVaz · No Comments

I have pretty much been a fan of Los Campesinos! from the first instant I heard the first few tracks on their debut Hold on Now, Youngster..., and having loved and listened to their prior efforts and having seen them live twice I was really looking forward to this one, but also wondering if we would just get some more of the same. But I should have known they wouldn't disappoint me at all ...

Eels – End Times

Posted February 25th, 2010 by BVaz · No Comments

Eels, AKA Mark Oliver Everett, released this stripped down new album last month called End Times. The album certainly has its moments and at times really seems like it could be building towards something, but ultimately I think you have an album that has some solid tracks and some solid moments but overall as a full realized album doesn't quite do everything well enough to be great. He strays into folk territory and more blues-y ...

Hot Chip – One Life Stand

Posted February 9th, 2010 by BVaz · No Comments

The UK masters of the fun dance jams Hot Chip returned this week with their latest release titled One Life Stand. As anyone who has heard their records before or seen their live show knows, no band really infuses a fun vibe into their music and genuinely seems to be loving what they are doing any more than these guys, and that great trend continues once again on this fine effort. The record ...

Will Stratton – No Wonder

Posted February 3rd, 2010 by BVaz · No Comments

Will Stratton is a NYC-area singer-songwriter who released this album No Wonder in October last year and as I have been listening to it pretty solidly over the past week I have to say I am very impressed here and this is some great, great stuff. Generally a very chilled out, spacious acoustic kind of sound, he really sets a great mood and a great tone with these songs. Great wintry kinds of ...

Red Pens – Reasons

Posted January 26th, 2010 by BVaz · 1 Comment

Minneapolis' Red Pens are a band that seems to be getting out there a little bit more and with good reason, they have a great sound and a lot of energy and some great songs here on their debut record, "Reasons". So far it seems like they have really gotten some serious local attention but you haven't heard much on them on the national stage, but I imagine that will probably change here at ...

Girls in Trouble – Girls in Trouble

Posted January 20th, 2010 by Daigle · No Comments

Girls in Trouble (the band) is the alter ego of Alicia Jo Rabins, who released Girls in Trouble (the album) in November of last year.  After I gave this a couple of listens, I decided to find out just who Girls in Trouble were, and as it turns out there is basically  nothing out there on this rather excellent and promising debut record, which is a shame because top to bottom, this album is a real ...

Letting Up Despite Great Faults – Letting Up Despite Great Faults

Posted January 19th, 2010 by BVaz · No Comments

Well for my first review of the new year I will jump off on this one I received not long ago, the self titled debut from the LA band Letting Up Despite Great Faults, which was released in October of last year. These guys have perfected an awesome mix of shoegaze-y jams with a distinct pop leaning, almost a cross between M83 and Pains of Being Pure at Heart. There is a mixing ...

Ivan Ives – Newspeak

Posted December 1st, 2009 by BVaz · 6 Comments

This is an album I've been wanting to write about forever. I got it way back like maybe even in January or something and was trying to time a review with the release date, but the release in May came and went, and it is a shame because this is easily my favorite hip-hop record this year and I am really kind of surprised that it hasn't gotten any more attention that it has. ...

Dirty Projectors – Bitte Orca

Posted November 17th, 2009 by BVaz · 1 Comment

Also a little late on this one, but better late than never on what is easily one of the top few releases of 2009. This is such a great record and it just grows on you more each time you explore it honestly. I was initially kind of enamored with these guys after catching their set at the Pitchfork party at SXSW, and subsequent to that they released this great record Bitte Orca. ...
