Matthew Sweet is now officially a repeat offender in the Throwback Thursday feature. I found myself looking for some sort of typical, mainstream yet good 90s alt rock material to listen to the other day and after much debating came to Matthew Sweet’s Altered Beast as my choice of listening for the day. You really cannot go wrong with this album. There are some great ‘singles’ in here with “Devil With The Green Eyes” and the excellent “Time Capsule”, as well as those more obscure, impeccably well done Matthew Sweet tracks. This is really an incredible album from top to bottom and throwing it on really took me back, in a good way, in the way I needed to be taken back. I find that his stuff stands up really well to time, and I still get a kick out of songs like “Someone To Pull The Trigger”, and you have to love the “The Ugly Truth” with “Ugly Truth Rock” on here, giving two versions of a great song (reminiscent of “Outta Sight/Outta Mind” on Wilco’s Being There) in one album. And does anyone remember how there were like 8 different colored covers for this album in the record store? Anyway, the album is good stuff, and worth a look back for sure.
