Nada Surf – The Proximity Effect [Throwback Thursday]

Posted May 27th, 2010 · Artists: Nada Surf

In a few weeks Nada Surf will be releasing their latest album, a covers album called If I Had A Hi-Fi. While it is unfortunate that we aren’t getting new Nada Surf material, I thought I would take this opportunity for a Throwback Thursday covering their most unknown and dark horse release, The Proximity Effect. Coming off of their debut, which some dubbed a one hit wonder due to their song ‘Popular‘, the band recorded their follow up called The Proximity Effect. Probably wanting an album full of ‘Popular’s, the record company, Elektra, said they didn’t hear a hit on the album and wanted them to return to the studio to ‘find a hit’. They had the band record some cover songs and eventually the band refused to try to ‘make a hit’ according to Elektra anymore and got dropped from the label. The album got released in Europe in 1998 to critical acclaim, and the band had to fight with Elektra for 2 years to get the rights back to the album and eventually released it in the states in 2000 under their own label. The band went through some touring on the album but it was a dark period for the band for sure and they fell out of music consciousness for a little while because of the turmoil, until they came back to prominance with the terrific Let Go. Despite the tumultuous history of this album, it is really a pretty awesome album and has some of my favorite classic Nada Surf tracks on it. Looking at Amazon and the like it seems that this album is way last on the list of purchased albums for them, and I’m sure that most people have not heard it or don’t even know about it. This is a really good album, and it was a crime that it got so screwed around by Elektra, but I highly recommend checking it out if you are delving into the Nada Surf back catalog.
