Yeasayer – Granada Theater – 4/8/10

Posted April 12th, 2010 · Artists: Yeasayer

Yeasayer played the other night to a mega-packed sweaty sold-out Granada house in Dallas, and it was great stuff. I have seen these guys several times now and it really never gets old. They still bring the energy, bring the noise and certainly bring their own interesting brand of psych-prog rock to the peeps. On the heels of the new album, Odd Blood, the crowd was packed in to see these guys and they did not disappoint. They hit on a few old ones, but it was a heavy dose of the new album in another great show from one of the best live bands out there.

First, I think Granada had a bit of a heat problem again last night because it was hot in there, and very, very sweaty. Not much air was moving, and honestly the crowd didn’t get moving too much until later in the set when they hit on some of the bigger songs. Once again, “2080″ and “Sunrise” are timeless, great, awesome as hell songs that still blow everyone away live. “2080″ showed up 2/3rds of the way throguh the regular set and “Sunrise” closed it out. Alongside those instant classics the new songs, especially the ‘singles’ “Ambling Alp” and “O.N.E.” really stood out.

It was great to see one of the odder but strangely catchy and awesome songs on the record, “Love Me Girl”, get a spectacular live treatment and get the house moving. Strangely that off-beat, change tempo masterpiece probably got the most ‘dance’ reaction out of the crowd all night (possible exception: “Ambling Alp”). They opened the show with record opener “The Children”, which was good enough, but I think it is basically an extended intro for the greatness of “Ambling Alp”, and to not have them dive into that right afterwards it kind of felt awkward. “Madder Red” and “I Remember” got some sing along cred with the “ooo ooo ooo”s at the beginning of the former and the “you’re stuck….” chorus in the latter. Both were great.

The new album has been a bit divisive for sure, but as I said in my review, I love it, and I thought the new stuff played awesome. These guys have one fo the better live acts going, and they have some killer material to back it up. Every song someone is doing something different, but they bring it with great energy, and really give it everything they can. The show reaffirmed my love for the new album and the old album, and all things Yeasayer generally. Needless to say if you have been living under a rock and haven’t seen these guys, you need to rectify that.
