 Metric - Palladium - 12/2/09

Metric came to Dallas and rocked out the Palladium in a very tight, brisk set that seemingly entertained everyone to their heart’s content.   Rapidly moving between energetic songs, the charismatic Emily Haines easily engaged the audience and kept things moving right along.  For the full review, all the live shots and sample MP3s of two pretty great Metric tracks, hit the jump.

But before I go into that, allow me to take a minute to ask all you girls to stop wearing your giant purses to crowded shows.  Leave those ridiculous bastards in the car or bring a smaller bag, because you’re annoying us all to death.

I missed the opener (Palladium had a startlingly early time for the opener’s curtain – 7:30!!), but arrived just in time to see the Metric set and right away they hit one of my favorite tracks from their latest album, Fantasies, Stadium Love, which sounded great.  In fact, the band had a fantastic mix and quality throughout almost the entire show.

Every song was near album-perfect with great tone, great volume, and everyone sounded spot on with the lead or backing vocals.  In fact, for as much as Ms. Haines moved around and danced on the stage throughout the show, it made her singing even more impressive with her ability to keep it sounding so good, despite the exercise.  Near the end of the show, the mix got a little out of whack with too much of everything drowning out the lead vocals a little, but it was still ok.

The show also had a huge age range and if I’m not mistaken, a whole lot of gay people – dudes and girls alike.  Which makes me happy because if someone is going to be a gay icon, better Emily Haines than Madonna or someone terrible like that.  (I definitely got hit on by a dude, though.)

Anyways, in the show, the drums drive the party.  They are rapid, tight, and make everything go, bigtime.  Songs like Satellite Mind are absolutely made by the drums and it definitely sounds cool as hell live.  In addition, they also played some of my favorites with Sick Muse, Twilight Galaxy, Gimme Sympathy, Front Row and Collect Call.  They also played my not-so-favorite Blindness, which by the time tey got to it (closed the main set), the mix was a little off and it was just ok.

Pretty great show, and if you like Fantasies, then check out their show, because they played almost the entire album, and all the songs from Fantasies sounded absolutely killer.  This is the band Chairlift wishes it was; nice job, Metric.
