St. Vincent – Granada – 6/18/09
Posted June 30th, 2009 · Artists: St. Vincent
Fresh on the heels of killer David Byrne and Grizzly Bear shows the week came to a climax on a Thursday evening at the Granada when hometown girl Annie Clark AKA St. Vincent came through on the second to last date of her tour (before Austin and doing ACL-TV), and she absolutely killed it before a near sell-out crowd.
I have been listening to “Actor” for a few weeks now and I am really enjoying the album, but on some levels it wasn’t gelling for me. Parts I love and parts I was kind of lost by, but seeing her dish out all these songs live really brought it all together and really made me love this show.
Before she got up there though we had the pleasure of being treated to Pattern is Movement. These guys were really, really into it and dropped killer covers of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and D’Angelo. It was pretty awesome I have to say.
The crowd was energetic and very adoring of Annie but it was also a reserved seat Granada set up so was a little more subdued and less crowded than the Grizzly Bear sweat-fest. This is a good thing of course as eveyone was able to enjoy her bring a pretty awesome mix of quiet introspective moments with giant epic bombasts of song into one great show. She skirted the line perfectly between edginess and tenderness so that the show never truly went 100% one way or another but was keeping you intently watching and listening the whole way.
She had the crowd in the palm of her hand the whole way, and just killed it with everything she played from the awesome “Now Now” to a great chilled out version of “The Party” and many more of course. She had a two mic set up for the more ‘megaphone’ like vocal segments of the songs and switched seemlessly between the two.
She was in command of all of the material and the audience, and it was a really remarkable and impressive performance. The band was also in perfect form as well. I unfortunately had not seen her before, but she delivered in every way that a great show does, and it really seems like she has arrived on the scene in a big, big way with the way she took it over. Really impressive stuff so if you get a chance to see her anytime soon definitely jump on it, you will not regret it.
