David Byrne - Majestic Theater - 6/14/09

The Talking Head himself took the stage at the Majestic last Sunday night to a packed (and hyped) house at the Majestic Theater here in downtown Dallas. He played some new stuff, a lot of old stuff, and the crowd ate it up like cash money.

I had never been to the Majestic before, and based on their signs outside it seems it is primarily a stage/Broadway show kind of venue. After this show though I really wish they would do more concerts here. Anyone who is out there listening, book more shows at this place, it was cool as shit. It has that great old theater vibe to it, but the sound was generally pretty good as well. I realize that it probably wouldn’t be viable for most bands we mention here to play this place, but it would be cool if some more bands did play there.

The second thing to mention is the crowd. I do not think I have seen a crowd more hyped in Dallas for a show than this one. They thunderously cheered every song and by the end they were almost drowning out Byrne himself when he would try to speak in the PA. It was loud and awesome. Not sure why, but the crowd loved every second of it, as did I, so it really made for a cool atmosphere. The Majestic is all fixed seats, but by the end everyone in the house was standing through pretty much all of the encores.

As for the set material, some stuff off the Eno record(s), lots of good Talking Heads stuff. The Talking Heads were never my favorite band in the world but he pretty much killed it on every song, Heads or no Heads. Burning Down The House, Take Me To The River, etc, all killed, all great stuff.

Not being super familiar with his or the Talking Heads material I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy it but it was great. He did have a lot of interpretive dance/choreography and little bits that he did during the show that kept it interesting throughout when you had some more basic songs, but there was great energy, great chemistry with his band, and you can tell they put a lot of work into the show. It was pretty incredible and anyone out there who has a chance to check him out you will not be disappointed. One of the best shows so far this year for sure.
