The hype machine that is Animal Collective stopped by the House of Blues the other night to drop their tribal electronic jams on the crowd, and although I am not one of those people who is a die-hard AnCo lover, the show was really really good and they pretty much delivered in every way you could want for their show.
The lighting was pretty much non-existant so it was impossible to see them for the most part, with their rigs lit up from the front and some giant balloon lit up on top and their album background lit up in the back, the guys in the band themselves were pretty much just shadowy figures bobbing and dancing about. The show had a great flow to it as they had extended jam interludes between the songs that served as very good transitions. Pretty much everything they hit they hit out of the park and had the crowd going for the most part, though I certainly could have expected the crowd to be a little more nuts (by the end I think they were). I really loved the version of ‘Fireworks’ they did, I dig that song.
Despite having a very non-interactive, shadowy stage setup they songs were hitting on all cylinders so it didn’t detract from it too much and they put on a pretty incredible show actually. Though I still won’t categorically say that the album is the best of the year/century/whatever, their live show does a great job of delivering on the mountain of hype these guys have had built around them throughout this year. Go check these guys out (like you need me to tell you that).
