Coachella 2009 Lineup Announced
Posted January 30th, 2009 · Artists: Dr. Dog, The Hold Steady
After much consternation from Coachella, with the usual fake announcements and announcements that should have been but never were, finally the lineup has been announced to all. Now on first glance there aren’t too many ‘holy shit’ names at the top of the main poster, but as I was scanning this on my iphone I came across a personal nuclear bomb on the lineup, namely Superchunk. Yes, my beloved Superchunk will be playing Saturday afternoon at this thing so I may very well have to bite the bullet and go. They haven’t toured hardly at all since like 2003 so any chance you have to see them may be your last, so I feel like this may have to happen.
Looking at the headliners the big one is obviously Paul McCartney, and I would assume he will be playing unopposed on Friday night. It would be kind of cool to see him, I can just imagine 100,000 people singing ‘Hey Jude’ in the middle of a field in the California desert. The other Friday night hitters are actually really good with Franz and Moz double teaming it. The rest of Friday is pretty stacked as well with Los Campesinos! (yes!), Hold Steady, Girl Talk, Black Keys, the Presets, the Ting Tings. Also Leonard Cohen! This thing is kind of loaded. Also I *really* want to see N.A.S.A. on Friday, that would be cool as shit.
Saturday has the weakest headliners in my book as I could really do without both Amy Winehouse and the Killers. Once you get below that tragedy of music you get to some other incredible day bands. Of course Superchunk, whom I’ve already mentioned, TVOTR, Fleet Foxes (!), Dr. Dog, Hercules and Love Affair, Glasvegas, Blitzen Trapper. Another fairly full day there. And is that Booker T minus the MG’s I see there?
Sunday has a more off-beat day lineup, but it also has some of the more incredible names that really make this a solid lineup. The big one on there is My Bloody Valentine, with their ear shattering volumes of sound. The Cure is a band I’ve always liked but never seen, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs should supposedly have a new album out at some point (I think?). Lupe Fiasco rules, as does Peter, Bjorn and John. Then of course you have Public Enemy, awesome. Lykke Li and Okkervil River, two favorites, sneak in there along with some incredibly solid lesser knowns like No Age and Friendly Fires.
The show has a great mix of current indie bands and legendary late 80s/early 90s acts, should be good stuff. The full list:
