Mix Tape Monday – The Return of Fringe and Lost

There is certainly a lot going on this week, but really what I am most looking forward to is the return of Fringe and Lost. Of course 24 started last week, which has been pretty awesome so far, and is on again tonight so that is good. But I certainly have never been able to follow a show in the history of TV quite like I have followed Lost, now that we are in Season 5. Oh and also, if you aren’t 100% up to date on these shows there will be some spoilers in here, so buyer beware.

Fringe I DVRed for most of the first part of the season but fell way behind on it and have been playing catch up since it went off the air in order to get ready for the new episodes tomorrow. I have to say, I am a fan. It reminds me a lot of Alias, with distinct and different episodes all being part of a bigger mystery. In the case of Alias it was the Rimbaldi stuff, and in this case it is ‘The Pattern’. So far they haven’t really tied it together quite as well and ‘The Pattern’, while still mysterious, at this point is really just a bunch of crazy sci-fi shit that has happened without a ton of correlation being tied to it. Though there is obviously the overarching mysteries of John Scott and Mr. Jones, as well as why Mr. Jones wants Olivia. So I am excited to see how they continue this on and have high hopes. It is going to be on at 9/8c tomorrow, and you can catch up with all 10 current episodes online.

The other show that is returning really needs no introduction regardless of whether you watch it or not. If you have been staying with the show through 4 (!) seasons and almost 100 episodes then you know it is coming back and you are pumped. For those who don’t watch it, you certainly know what it is, but at this point there is pretty much no way you could catch up on the story because it would probably take you months to do so.

Anyway, having watched through Season 4 again recently, I am very excited about the new season obviously, but once again the whole island disappearing seems a lot like ‘jumping the shark’ as now the show has strayed into sci-fi impossibility. Sure, there are a million things on the show that are ‘impossible’ (seeing dead people, smoke monster, etc), but at least we were dealing in a seemingly real physical world, so that the other things could maybe exist as perception, or be somehow explained as a reaction to this strange place. But now when we are not really in a remotely possible physical reality with a moving island, I fear a little for where this is going.

It will also be interesting to see how things play out on the island after the ship blew up. Daigle and I were having a conversation about whether Daniel survived, and it is tough to tell from the show itself (he was ferrying back and forth to the boat), BUT as I have just noticed if you go to this page and look at the bottom, Daniel is in the promo photo of the people who stayed on the island, so it seems he is back, which is good. I thought for a long time that Jin was going to end up being alive after the explosion, but I think that I was probably wrong on that and Jin is toast (especially if Sun is going on a revenge spree). One thing that I am also wondering is what the play out of Ben’s story is going to be. He seems to be involved in getting them back to the island, but we already know he can’t go back himself (turned the donkey wheel), so is he solely motivated by revenge on Widmore or is there something more going on there?

Watch episodes of Lost online here to catch up if necessary.

Anyway, the theories are many, the answers are few. So if you are like me and waiting for the greatness to return and are pondering what is going to go down, leave a comment below, let’s discuss the greatness, and hopefully this will be a good premiere.
