Glenmorangie Nectar D’or – A dessert scotch

Posted December 18th, 2008 ·

I picked up a bottle of this fine malt not long ago and must say I was quite surprised by it. It was a good surprise though. Glenmorangie has always been a scotch that I have enjoyed, yet never favored when selecting a scotch to purchase. Prior to tasting this malt, the old and I believe defunct, Portwood finish was my favorite of the line. Feeling that I needed to try some of the relatively new lines of scotch by Glenmorangie (which also includes the Quinta Ruban — a port cask finished scotch, which may and probably is the same as the old Portwood label, and the Lasanta — a sherry cask finished scotch) I grabbed a bottle of the Nectar D’Or.

The Nectar D’Or is finished in Sauternes casks, the famous French dessert wine. This finish imparts a subtle, yet very noticeable sweet note to the malt — think of a faint hint of honey. As the underlying malt itself is a floral Speysider with plenty of sublte heathery notes, the honey-like sweetness melds in well with the overall flavorings of the malt. I found the first sip incredibly smooth and nicely sweet with only a small tinge of smokiness–which made for a great balance. Alas, due to the nature of these flavors I found this malt to be especially worthy as a an after dinner digestif. Instead of retiring for Port or Cognac, try substituting a glass of this beautiful malt.
