Hot Chip – Palladium – 9/25/08
Posted September 29th, 2008 · Artists: Hot Chip
Another incredibly solid performance from the great Hot Chip last night at the Palladium. Now the Palladium is certainly not my favorite venue ever, I actually think it pretty much sucks, but despite that there was a fairly good atmosphere, and people got to do some dancing and some jumping, as people should do during a Hot Chip show.
The opener was Drums of Death, basically a Scottish (I think) guy with a Macbook and some mixers dressed like the Crow (facepaint and all) jumping around on stage. The crowd was kind of meh for him, but I will say he gets a definite ‘A’ for effort on this one, he was mad into it. The crowd was still fairly thin at that point too so no one was really dancing.
The crowd filtered in a little after him, but with the vast expanse of the Palladium it still wasn’t in any way, shape or form packed. But we were kind of standing in the middle about 10 feet back from the stage and at least where we were there was a good vibe and good dancing energy throughout.
They kicked off with “One Pure Thought”, which as always was awesome. They hit quite a few on the new album, even a few new tracks. The new tracks were pretty good, but it seemed like the ones they played were generally more low-key tracks, and they weren’t really straight up dance jams. “No Fit State” was once again a highlight, and then they closed it out with a cover of the Prince/Sinead O’Connor number “Nothing Compares 2 U”. They decided to bring a drummer along this time as well, whereas last time I saw them they just rocked the drum machine. It was a nice touch, though I’m not sure it really changed a whole lot about the show.
These guys are just great live and if you get any chance to check them out, you certainly need to jump on that. While this show wasn’t quite the jam-packed house dance party from when I saw them last time, it was still really good, and they once again brought the dance to the peeps, which is always a win in my book.
