Sea Wolf/Jealous Girlfriends – Schuba’s – 6/5/08
Posted June 6th, 2008 · Artists: Jealous Girlfriends, Sea Wolf
Well occasionally I will venture out to a show where I have pretty much zero idea about an artist, and such was a night last night, and these guys were actually pretty solid. I have heard a few songs by Sea Wolf before, but not a whole lot, and certainly not a whole album. The song “Black Dirt” I had heard of course, and you most likely have heard it before as well, and it is a pretty good jam. I actually was more familiar with openers Jealous Girlfriends since I have heard them before and have seen them when they opened for Nada Surf at Metro back in April (ps: side note, Nada Surf will be back here at Ribfest on Sunday). However, my general impression of Sea Wolf was of a very chilled out, subdued kind of sound with some orchestration thrown in, and while that is primarily true of their live sound as well, live they sounded much more upbeat than I expected.
The Jealous Girlfriends were on when I got there and they put on another extremely solid show. I kind of dug their sound when I saw them back in April, and they certainly have some catchy ass shit going on and they certainly rock it out pretty well. I think we will be hearing more and more from these guys in the future because they are pretty good. It was a little odd to have them paired here with Sea Wolf, since these guys are much more rock than Sea Wolf is, but either way, they were still solid.
I think if you listen to a lot of Sea Wolf you probably do really notice the chilled out nature of their music. But I think live it takes on more of a groovy alt-country-rock kind of feel than it maybe does on the albums and recorded works. This is really a good thing for the live shows, and they did a good job of bringing the crowd into it, and everyone seemed high energy and in good spirits. Overall, even though I wasn’t really that familiar with them, I was still pretty impressed and would certainly recommend checking them out if you dig their sound. And if you think you like the songs but they are just a little too chilled out, then for the live sound just imagine that but slightly higher energy and more upbeat. I can’t really speak to setlists or song selections since I really am not up to speed on their stuff, I’d be curious what super fans thought of the show. Anyway, another good show, despite Schuba’s being ridiculously crowded (seriously, stop putting the tables out Schuba’s, it is always a disaster), and both Jealous Girlfriends and Sea Wolf were pretty solid.
