Radiohead – Superpages.com Center – 5.18.08

Amazing. That really sums it all up right there. My mind was thoroughly blown and my face extensively melted from the rock bomb that Radiohead dropped on us Sunday night. For the last night of their first leg of the US tour, they played the Superpages.com Center (formerly Smirnoff) in Dallas next to Fair Park. Back in February or so, I stayed up all night to get waste tickets for the show, and it certainly paid off as our seats were pretty awesome. We were about 5 rows back from the pit area in the seating area a little bit right of center.
Anyway, I had never seen Radiohead before, so I was pretty jacked up for it. I listened to “Pablo Honey” and “The Bends” a shitload in high school, but had not been following them as closely in the post-”Kid A” era. That is, until “In Rainbows” dropped last year, and I totally fell in love with that album, which is one of the most completely solid top to bottom albums I have ever heard. The tour was announced and I decided I absolutely had to see them at any cost. So I finally got to see them on Sunday and they just blew my mind.
They played everything off of “In Rainbows”, as well as “Bangers & Mash”, and hit us with tunes from their back catalog as well. They closed the opening set with a mind-melting “Reckoner” into “Everything In Its Right Place” into “Idioteque” into “Bodysnatchers”, which certainly whipped the crowd into a frenzy. The frazzled crowd cheered them on to the first encore, and they dropped the bomb of “Fake Plastic Trees” on us. Despite the damage they were causing to faces throughout the crowd they rocked on into “Jigsaw” and “House of Cards”, which were obviously incredible. After an awesome “Exit Music”, they dropped a nuke on us by playing “The Bends”. I think that is the point at which I lost all senses and just went crazy. I certainly didn’t expect them to play that song at all, but when they did it was just like I couldn’t breathe due to my face being so melted. Second encore was “You and Whose Army?” and then the incredible “Paranoid Android”, which also made me lose my mind a little bit. Usually I don’t go too crazy at shows, but I think an exception can be made in this instance as I either danced to or sang along with every single song. Just sheer greatness.
The set list was absolutely incredible, you simply cannot beat hearing “The Bends”, and pretty much every song was just rocked to the full extent of the law. Certainly after finally seeing Radiohead after so long, it lived up to every expectation I could have had, and I can’t wait to see what they are going to drop on us at Lollapalooza. Needless to say if you have a chance to hit any of the shows on the second leg of the US tour, do yourself a favor and make it happen.
All I can really say is wow, incredible, and bring on Lollapalooza.
