Dillon Fence – Outside In – Mammoth Records – 1993
This week’s Throwback Thursday focuses on an album that I think never really got the attention it deserved, mainly because the band never really became very popular, despite this and several other albums. Dillon Fence was one of the bands prevalent in the Chapel Hill, NC scene of the early 90s that included bands like Superchunk and Archers of Loaf. Chapel Hill back in the early 90s was just one of those places a ton of indie bands were coming out of. Anyway, this is one of those bands, and their 1993 release “Outside In” is just a great little nugget of pop-rock mastery. There really is not a bad song on the record, and there are a lot of great ones. I had the great fortune to see these guys when they toured for their greatest hits album in 2004. Their last real record was in 1994 I think (“Living Room Scene”).
Dillon Fence – One Bad Habit – From Outside In
Just a lot of overdrive and rock out going on here. Both of the guitarists in the band sung lead in the band, so this song is sung by the one who sung fewer songs, you can obviously see the difference in vocal styles with this and the second song. This song is pretty typical of the songs on the album, very groovy/hooky kind of rock lines with lots of overdubbed guitars. You know, the way people recorded music back then. Very catchy and cool song.
Dillon Fence – Any Other Way – From Outside In
This song is certainly less typical of the songs on the record, with a very slow, bluesy kind of tone to it, but I wanted to put it on here because I think it’s a pretty cool sounding song. I remember when I saw them live and they played this song pretty much everyone in the crowd was kind of swaying back and forth and I thought to myself that this would be a great song for a prom or something. Like end of the night, everyone is wasted and just wants to get laid, this song would fit that mood perfectly. Has a nice little solo thrown in midway through the song. I think it’s just a really well done song. Anyway, it is a slow jam for sure compared to the rest of the album, but the world needs slow jams, that’s how babies are made.
Hope you kids are enjoying the Throwback Thursday segment so far, stay tuned again next week for another classic.
