Stone Temple Pilots – Core [Throwback Thursday]

Posted March 11th, 2010 by BVaz · No Comments

Well in honor of STP playing SXSW next week, I thought we would take a gander back at an album I rocked way back in high school, the Stone Temple Pilots’ Core. Not really sure how well this one holds up to the test of time, it still has some songs that rock a little bit, but this album is unmistakeably from the ‘grunge’ era and makes no bones about it, and in that sense maybe it is a little dated sounding. I think their follow up record was probably more popular and maybe better regarded at this point, but this is straight ahead grung-y Marshall’ed out guitars and gruff vocals 101. Regardless, I’m sure that they will have a solid showing at SXSW, and were I to be in Austin it would be worth exploring purely for the curiosity factor. I would also like to go ahead and nominate this Sunday as “Naked Sunday”, that is all.

New Strokes Album Drops September 2010

Posted March 10th, 2010 by Daigle · No Comments

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Julian Casablancas and the entire Strokes crew will drop LP 4 in September of this year.  In the same article, they report that the sixth headliner for Lollapalooza 2010 will be Phoenix (along with The Strokes, Lady GaGa, Arcade Fire, Soundgarden and *vomits* Green Day).

Also, Julian Casablancas is a fake name, right?

Butterfly Explosion – Lost Trails

Posted March 10th, 2010 by BVaz · No Comments

This is a band that is up and coming and will be hitting up SXSW shortly. They have some good epic, guitar rock kinds of songs, some instrumentals and some more ballad-y type songs on this record. They remind me a bit of Longwave or a band like that, certainly a good ear for a pop hook and a good ear for matching everything together in a very polished way. Some of the songs on the album work better than others, but I imagine their wall of sound approach would be a good one to check out live, especially if you are looking around for new bands to check out in Austin at SXSW, they would certainly be on my list to peep out and see what they are all about. They are from Dublin and have some great shoe-gaze-y, wall of sound/distortion rock songs that work very well, check it out. They have a few major market dates leading up to their stop in Austin, check out the list of dates below.

Butterfly Explosion 2010 Tour Dates:
14 Mar – Pianos – NYC
15 Mar – Crashin In presents @ Cameo Gallery – Brooklyn, NY
16 Mar – Bottom Lounge – Chicago, IL
17-21 Mar – SXSW – Austin, TX (showcases TBA)
